It came as a shock when the family of former Zimbabwean cricket captain and coach, Heath Streak, revealed that the fast-bowling legend had been diagnosed with cancer.
The news would have saddened a number of cricket fans who hold the legendary cricketer in high esteem, despite his documented flaws.
His family revealed the affable Streak’s condition in a statement and said he was undergoing cancer treatment under the care of one of the top oncologists in South Africa.
Streak is a name that features prominently in the history of Zimbabwean cricket right from his high school days at Falcon College in Esigodini, Matabeleland South province in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The former right-arm pacer played 65 Test matches and 189 ODIs for the Chevrons and remains the only Zimbabwean cricketer to take 100 Test wickets and more than 200 ODI wickets.
He also had a brief stint in the Indian Premier League, where he played for Kolkata Knight Riders.
The bulky Streak was known for his accuracy and variation in his bowling, which made him the mainstay of the Chevrons for more than a decade until his retirement in 2005.
After his retirement, Streak took up coaching roles in Bangladesh and India. He was appointed the Chevrons’ head coach in 2016 and held the role up to 2018.
The news of his cancer diagnosis has come as a shock to cricket lovers around the world, and the cricketing world has rallied together to wish him a speedy recovery.
This outpouring of support is testament to how highly Streak is considered by cricket fans and his peers alike.
Many cricket fans have taken to social media to express their support for Streak and praised him for his contribution to the game and shared memories of the times when he inspired them.
It is quite heartening to see that the legendary fast bowler has touched so many lives, and that his fans are wishing him good health and a quick recovery.
The battle against cancer is not an easy one, and Streak has a tough challenge ahead of him. However, in a career that spanned for more than a decade, Streak faced many challenges and overcame them with his resilience and determination.
Given his track record as a player, we are confident that he will face this challenge with the same fighting spirit and determination that he displayed each time he donned the national team colours.
Despite being banned for eight years in 2021 after admitting to five breaches of the ICC’s anti-corruption code, including accepting payment, in Bitcoin, from a potential corrupter, we would like to put it on record that Streak was an inspiration to most of today’s cricketers.
His love for the game and dedication to Zimbabwean cricket always made him a figure to admire.
We at H-Metro join the entire cricketing fraternity in wishing Streak a speedy recovery and a quick return to good health. We are confident that you will overcome this challenge with the same courage and perseverance that made you a legend of the game.
May the support and well-wishes of cricket fans from around the world give you the strength to fight, and may you find comfort in the knowledge that you are not alone. We are with you in this fight, and we look forward to your complete recovery.
