Editorial comment: It’s never too late to go back to school

TODAY, we have carried a refreshing story about one of our leading socialites, Lorraine Guyo, going back to school.

Guyo shot to national fame after recording a video, which went viral, asking men to consider her for a relationship.

Her explosion to become a famous person, one whose face was now dominating the social media landscape and also taking a good chunk of space in the newspapers, was sudden.

It transformed her from someone, whose life was quite private, into this person whose every move, and every word she uttered, was now being closely followed.

Of course, we know that comes with its costs.

There is relentless pressure that comes with living a life in the public spotlight.

It means that one bad mistake might bring everything crumbling down.

Lorraine knows what we are talking about because she has also had a fair share of her controversies.

It comes with the terrain.

One of the things we have noted, in recent years, is this feel-good move by these celebrities to go back to school to find refuge in education.

Many of them believe that education can equip them with the right tools to deal with the relentless pressure of their world.

But, boosting one’s education comes with a lot of benefits and we are happy to note that Lorraine saw the light and decided to further her education.

She graduated last week.

She told us that her certificate in public speaking from the International School of Public Speaking has opened a new page in her life.

“I have gained strength from my weaknesses,” said Lorraine.

“My graduation means a lot to me and this was inspired by people who laughed at me that I am not good at writing English and speaking it.

“The Lorraine Guyo brand is growing and I need to be able to communicate with corporates and link up with the international world.”

Lorraine is also studying Business Administration.

She has followed in the footsteps of many others, including global celebrities, who have travelled that path before. Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest movie directors of our time.

He is worth around US$3.6 billion dollars.

He is the man behind some of the best known and most celebrated movies of the 20th and 21st centuries.

He dropped out of university to pursue this career and, after making all these billions, decided to return to school in his fifties.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in film and electronic arts from California State University, Long Beach in 2002.

One of the finest actresses of her generation, Emma Watson, enrolled at Brown University in 2009 and graduated with a BA in English Lit in 2014.

She filmed the last two Harry Potter films during her time at the university.

Music superstar Shakira also went back to school and took a short university course in the History of Western Civilisation.

Michael Jordan, who is largely celebrated as the greatest basketball star of all-time, also went back to school to finish his degree in geography.
