REPORTS of mass deaths in Kenya linked to a suspected cult are quite scary and relevant to us here in Zimbabwe.
The continent, in particular, and the world, at large, has been touched by these deaths.
As of yesterday, there were reports the number of deaths had passed the 90 mark with more bodies expected to be pulled out of shallow graves,
The expectation is that the death toll will pass the 100 mark.
This follows reports 122 people are still missing.
The cult leader, Paul Makenzie Nthenge, has been arrested.
Ironically, he didn’t starve himself to death.
It’s as scary as a horror movie and Zimbabweans must be on high alert against such cults.
The authorities must reign in such dangerous pastors and prophets and save masses who are usually on the receiving end of these cult leaders.
What makes it a cause for concern is that children are usually the ones who are sacrificed as was the case in Kenya.
Children should not be subjected to such practices since they don’t have the power to make decisions.
This should never be allowed to happen in Zimbabwe.
Kenyan President William Ruto told the media that the deaths were akin to terrorism.
This shows how concerned President Ruto was when he declared the rogue pastor belonged in jail.
One of Kenyan Ministers declared the 800 hectares of land, where the cult held its rituals, was now a crime scene.
The Kenyan authorities’ reaction shows that there is a need to investigate numerous cults we have in Zimbabwe.
While people have the right to worship, we cannot lose lives to cultism.
In 2014, a South African pastor made international headlines when he forced members of his flock to eat grass.
Pastor Lesego Daniel of Rabboni Centre Ministry in Garankuwa, north of Pretoria, claimed the act would bring them closer to God.
He was roundly condemned for his act but some gullible members of his flock believed in what he preached.
It was hard to convince congregants that they had been taken for a deadly ride as the cult leader made them believe in his commands.
Fear of the unknown, desperation and insecurity appear to have been forcing people to believe these self-styled pastors and prophets.
The same has been happening on home soil where some people have been forced to perform inhumane acts under the name of cultism.
Most of the victims only realise that they have been brainwashed after being abused by these cult leaders.
Most of these cults, which are led by charismatic and self-styled leaders, have brought a lot of misery among congregants.
Their excessive control of congregants has stripped many people of their dignity and rights.
Desperate people should not be swayed into joining dubious cults expecting their lives to change.
In most cults, people are promised riches and instant money, which lures them to join these sects.
As such, people must research a lot before joining these cults.
