AT one point, or another, in our lives, we have to deal with serious stress-related issues and mental challenges.
It’s just the way it is in this world.
How we deal with these challenges is how we define our lives.
Usually, dialogue and counselling is all that we need to help us find our way back from a very dark place.
It’s a tried-and-trusted remedy which has saved lives.
However, arrogance and unnecessary pride have combined to erect hurdles in our path to try and find a helping hand.
The increase in cases of young people taking their lives is both shocking and a cause for concern.
Infidelity, drug and substance abuse along with some shady deals have all combined to fuel cases of suicide as a sense of hopelessness is driving people crazy.
Sadly, many of our young men have become weaker, and reckless, and this has led them to find themselves in very difficult circumstances.
As a community, we need to respect the sanctity of life
Last week, we carried a sad story of a city bouncer who committed suicide, in a suspected case of infidelity.
The bouncer was a popular figure in local showbiz circles for rendering his services to celebrities, among them musician Killer T.
His lifeless body was found in a hotel room in the capital.
Besides the body, there was also a container of cyanide poison and crystals, mixed with unknown liquid, which were also recovered.
In the same week, we reported another case of a 19-year-old Banket man, who committed suicide, after being reprimanded for stealing his uncle’s memory stick.
Prior to this death, we had also reported several cases of men committing suicide, after coming across their spouses’ shenanigans.
Some of these cases could have easily been addressed through counselling.
In most cases, arrogance and failure to look for solutions elsewhere, played key parts in driving the people to commit suicide.
Bottling issues is never a solution since it has negative consequences.
Some of these issues, which we want to believe are hard to solve, can be easily addressed by community elders.
It is high time we stop disrespecting our elders, who have seen it all, and are a fountain of wisdom, which can help resolve the difficult situations that we might find ourselves in.
The grey hair comes with wisdom and maturity.
Our church pastors, and priests, can also provide such counselling.
Here we are talking about genuine church leaders, men and women who have dedicated their lives to spreading the word of God.
We are not talking about the fake prophets, who have seemingly taken over our communities, duping many people of their hard-earned money.
The police have also proved to be useful, especially when counselling and dialogue is needed.
However, there are some police officers who mock men, who report cases of gender-based violence or infidelity.
Rather than helping the victim, such conduct only serves to drive them deeper into their dark places.
