Editorial Comment: Let’s take precautions against flooding

Reports about heavy rains expected this weekend are both welcome and concerning to some Zimbabweans.

The Metrological Services Department (MSD) revealed that heavy rains are expected along and north of the main watershed and the Eastern Highlands from today till Sunday.

Reports say an eastward moving cold front, currently upon the western coast of South Africa, is set to result in widespread showers across Zimbabwe.

To farmers, this is good news as some crops were already showing signs of stress.

However, the same cannot be said by those in areas that are prone to flooding.

Heavy rains can leave a trail of destruction if people don’t take necessary precautions to avoid disaster.

With the country making great strides towards improving infrastructure in areas that were hit by tropical cyclones, the progress should not be stalled.

In recent years, flooding caused by tropical cyclones left a trail of destruction and death.

Cyclone Idai, which claimed many lives in Chimanimani and some parts of Chipinge and Masvingo, instantly comes into mind.

A number of people died after not heeding flood warnings by authorities.

We believe our people have learnt something from previous flooding disasters.

Roofs are usually blown away while ageing trees are uprooted by strong winds, which accompany the heavy rains.

Therefore, those travelling are warned to exercise extreme caution on the roads since visibility is affected.

People should never be tempted to cross flooded rivers no matter the situation.

A lot of lives have been lost, with people drowning while attempting to cross flooded rivers.

Motorists should also be responsible and avoid crossing shallow bridges, as they risk their cars being swept away resulting in loss of lives.

It doesn’t matter what type of vehicle one drives, avoiding flooded bridges is the best form of safety.

Let’s remember that flood waters do not respect any vehicle make, so whether one feels they are driving a 4×4, please heed the warnings and take precaution.

There should also be cooperation between stakeholders and the Civil Protection Unit to ensure those trapped by floods can be rescued swiftly.

Those that built on wetlands will also be affected, and need to act now to prevent disaster.

While they can’t do anything to prevent their houses being flooded, they can at least save their moveable property by storing it somewhere else to prevent damages.
