EDITORIAL COMMENT: Rusape teen needs expert help

YESTERDAY, we carried a touching story involving a Rusape girl who has a rare skin disease.

The 17-year-old needs love, prayers and financial assistance as she battles this rare condition.

It is reported the girl’s condition started off as a small blister before it spread throughout the entire body.

The family has tried everything – from traditional healers, prophets and local medical facilities – without success.

They also claim Nomsa Mundembe has not been responding to medication and her condition has been worsening.

Nomsa’s condition was initially said to be a septic rash, which has since left her skin peeling off.

As expected, a number of theories are now flying around with family members convinced she was bewitched.

The myth of witchcraft will always feature in most African set-ups.

The family claims the skin disease is being caused by an invisible serpent, which licks the girl’s body.

This, according to the father, has prompted the family to look for faith healers for some intervention.

The teenage girl’s deteriorating condition calls for urgent help.

This ordeal should not be allowed to go on and we have to collectively look for people who can assist her.

If the family is convinced it’s a spiritual attack, then those who can help Nomsa should come forward and genuinely assist her.

However, many people are praying for her to get medical help and fight the skin condition.

Over the years, we have had similar cases which were treated by medical practitioners and certified herbalists, who know the game.

Skin cancer researchers should be consulted to save Nomsa.

She must not be allowed to suffer when we have people who can assist her.

As Zimbabweans, we have mobilised funds before to save kids in similar circumstances.

Some of these patients ended up getting help in foreign countries like India.

This is the kind of love we need at the moment to save the young girl who should be in school.

At 17, she still has a bright future ahead and we can’t afford to deny her that future.

As Zimbabweans, we should move forward and avoid some superstitious beliefs in cases which can be easily handled by medical practitioners.

Skin cancers need to be handled while early to avoid many complications.

Failure to assist patients earlier has proved costly over the years.

There are some diseases which can be managed once detected earlier.

We should develop a culture of quick reaction once our folks get ill or show signs of sickness.

Procrastination has proved costly and should never be allowed.

There is a need for us Zimbabweans to show each other love and care when some of our peers fall sick.

Sick people deserve love, care and appreciation.

The case of this Rusape girl is a disturbing one but there is a good chance that she can be helped.

What is needed is for her to get the right expert medical assistance.
