Editorial Comment: Thank you ZDF for vigilance, deterrence

YESTERDAY progressive Zimbabweans across the country converged at various centres to commemorate Heroes Day, a day set aside to remember the selfless sacrifices of the men, women and children who laid down their lives, sacrificed promising careers, missed their youths so that you and me can live with dignity in the land of our forebears.

Heroes Day should thus serve as a reminder to us all that the independence and democracy we enjoy today did not come on a silver platter, but at great cost to the patriotic sons and daughters of this land who had to subdue colonial settlers by force of arms.

And in his keynote address to the nation yesterday, President Mugabe revealed some of the atrocities that were perpetrated on the heroes and heroines who were decapitated and had their heads transported back to England as trophies for British museums.

These heads are still there in Britain which does not see the irony of trying to lecture us on democracy today while displaying evidence of their barbarism in their museums. Democracy is a concept that we had to teach them through the barrel of the gun.

And were it not for the men and women of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces who we celebrate today, the British would still have tried to invade independent Zimbabwe in a bid to install the puppet opposition that they helped launch in 1999 and that they have bankrolled since the turn of the millennium.

The invasion plans were exposed by former British chief of staff Lord Charles Guthrie who revealed that he had warned Tony Blair against trying to tussle with the venerated ZDF.

We take this opportunity to salute the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for continuing to be a people’s force, a deterrent that safeguards the gains of independence that came at such great cost.

These men and women under the capable leadership of Commander-in-Chief President Mugabe and Commander General Constantine Chiwenga should remain vigilant for the enemy remains hopeful as he continues abusing the democracy we fought for by meddling in our domestic affairs.

For instance earlier this month the puppet opposition party fronted by Morgan Tsvangirai dispatched a delegation to European capitals to seek funding and brief European leaders on political developments in Zimbabwe.

In so doing the MDC-T not only exposed its parentage, but also its nefarious agenda that is inimical to everything we have been celebrating over the past two days.

We repeat Westerners have nothing to teach us. From time immemorial they committed unspeakable atrocities against us as a people; from the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade through colonialism to the current era of neo-colonialism, we have had to fight for the rights and values they purport to preach to us today.

And even looking at the ongoing hysteria over Cecil the Lion, they purport to want to teach us conservation when they long decimated their animals, with the remaining ones only being saved by being locked up in zoos.

Let us all rededicate ourselves to the ideals that have guided our heroes, living and dead, that is the greatest thank you we can ever give them for giving up their lives so we can have ours.
