We hope no Nichodemous changes were made to the document in the interim given what happened ahead of Good Friday when some members of the Copac management committee made some unprocedural amendments to the document to obviate the need for harmonised elections before the expiry of the Seventh Parliament that ends midnight June 29.
It is providential that the constitutional Bill is set to be tabled at a time MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai who, as premier, leads Government business in Parliament is fresh from a tour of the region where the message he received was Zimbabwe is ready for elections.
A fact that was also underscored by chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, Justice Rita Makarau, who said her organisation was ready to conduct the elections.
Voter registration is under way as the clock furiously ticks to the demise of the inclusive Government, midnight June 29.
Therefore as it stands, the country is in election mode, and it is time our leaders realised it is time to expedite the adoption of the constitution to give people a chance to choose their leaders.
The inclusive Government has not only achieved its objective of fostering an environment of political and socio-economic stability in readiness for elections, it has also overstayed its welcome given that it was initially supposed to last no more than two years.
Justice Makarau’s words are worth repeating here.
Speaking at a pass out parade for 504 recruits at Ntabazinduna Police Depot on Thursday Justice Makarau said: “Allow me to wear my new hat as chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and remind everyone that 2013 is an election year.
“Let the spirit that was ushered in by the referendum, the spirit of wanting what is good for our nation, coupled by the call for peace by all national leaders before and during the referendum and the address by his Excellency, the President on Independence Day again calling for peace, be the guiding star to all Zimbabweans who will participate in the forthcoming elections either as candidates or as voters.
“Firstly, Zimbabweans have overwhelmingly decided to fashion out for themselves a new supreme law. It will be exciting for all of us to put the new law into practice. The beauty of it all is that it is our own.”
