If there is one revelation that has emerged from the harmonised elections, it is the fact that the votes the MDC-T received from inception in 1999 were not votes for the Western-conceived party, but votes against Zanu-PF. This is because in Election 2008, Zimbabweans who had been driven to the wall by sanctions-induced hardships almost gave the MDC-T victory against Zanu-PF but with Zanu-PF’s foresight of adopting the aggressor’s currency as the medium of tender, the assault on the economy ebbed somewhat which explains the socio-economic stability recorded over the past four and a half years.
The primary objective of economic sanctions is the decimation of the economy of the target country and among the prime targets of such economic warfare is the domestic currency.
In our case the Zimbabwe dollar succumbed to the onslaught in 2008, prompting Zanu-PF to beat the saboteurs at their own game by adopting their currency which they could not assault without killing their own economies in the process.
It should be stated from the outset that the US dollar was introduced by Zanu-PF, under a purely Zanu-PF government on January 29 2009, a whole two weeks before the formation of the inclusive Government on February 13 that year.
As such the multi-currency regime – that was introduced by then acting finance minister Patrick Chinamasa – had nothing to do with the MDC-T which found it in place ready for continuation.
Even the inclusive Government itself, throughout its tenure ran on purely Zanu-PF policies as the MDC formations did not bring anything to the table.
As such while the inclusive Government was tripartite, at policy level it was all Zanu-PF, a fact that was acknowledged even by the MDC-T ally and ex-finance minister Simba Makoni who laid into the MDC-T for paucity of ideas ahead of the harmonised elections.
From the foregoing, there is no cause at all for citizens to buy the MDC-T rhetoric that their total rejection at the hands of the electorate would translate to socio-economic hardships.
It is the MDC-T’s way of seeking relevance; Zimbabweans should send a clear message to the quisling party that they know where the rain began beating them which is why they rejected the MDC-T at the polls.
Zanu-PF is simply carrying on from where the inclusive Government left but this time without suffering the ignominy of working with people pulling in the opposite direction.
Things can only get better.
To this end we take this opportunity to remind the MDC formations that nothing can be gained from waving hardships as the proverbial bogeyman.
Voters are wiser and highly literate, they can clearly separate the wood from the trees.
The rumours emanating from Harvest House should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.
People should just be wary of greenhorn politicians who stack their political existence on the suffering of the common man.
