Editorial Comment: Zanu-pf must now concentrate on economy

zimpIt’s been more than a month since Zanu-PF held its highly successful congress which resulted in the appointment of a new leadership by the party’s First Secretary and President, Cde Robert Mugabe, to steer the party forward.A number of senior officials who had for years taken their party positions for granted and God-given were rejected by the people. These included former Vice President Joice Mujuru and some of her supporters who were fingered in a sinister plot to oust the President.

In the run-up to congress, a number of provincial executive chairmen and some executive members who were acting in cahoots with the ex-Vice President had votes of no confidence passed against them.

Pseudo-analysts claimed that Zanu-PF was in turmoil and on the verge of collapse. But the party dumbfounded all and sundry to emerge from the congress united and rejuvenated to face the challenge of transforming the economy.

In a bid to maintain discipline and unity, the Politburo directed that suspensions and votes of no confidence would no longer be allowed in the post congress period.

This was after some provinces attempted to oust people perceived to be aligned to the former Vice President.

It is disheartening to note that some provinces remain in pre-congress mode and are attempting to destabilise the party by going against the party’s directive against suspensions.

Matabeleland North has been caught in a storm after going against the party’s directive. The province had suspended five officials while the fate of Politburo member Sithembiso Nyoni also hangs in the balance as daggers are drawn against her.

The dispute in Matabeleland North has descended to the ridiculous and pettiness with a youth league official saying they do not want to see Cde Nyoni at today’s party in Binga district to celebrate the appointment of party officials from the province into the Politburo.

This is the same Cde Nyoni who was appointed politburo member by President Mugabe.

We believe that party members still caught in the politics of factionalism need to move forward. The party should not be held back by individuals who want to settle personal scores under the guise of ridding the party of factionalists.

The kingpins of factionalism have been removed and if the small fish being accused of having supported them are still in the party, we believe that these should be rehabilitated instead of firing them and unnecessarily disturbing the party.

The fact that most survived to attend congress implies that they were found to be innocent.

The party must now move forward and push for the implementation of economic programmes such as the Zimbabwe Agenda for Socio-Economic Transformation.

We hope that party structures will take heed of a warning by secretary for the commissariat Cde Saviour Kasukuwere that disciplinary action would be taken against those who continue defying the directive to stop suspensions.
