EDITORIAL COMMENT: Zimbabwe, Mozambique reap benefits of closer economic cooperation

THE prevailing political goodwill between Zimbabwe and Mozambique presents a significant opportunity for both nations to bolster their economic ties and unlock new avenues for trade and investment.

As neighbouring countries with a shared history and cultural heritage, Zimbabwe and Mozambique have long enjoyed cordial relations, which have been further strengthened in recent years.

However, despite this goodwill, the economic potential of their relationship remains largely untapped.

To fully capitalise on the existing political rapport, both countries must prioritise economic diplomacy, and work towards creating a more conducive environment for trade and investment.

One of the key areas where this potential can be realised is in the realm of trade.

Zimbabwe’s strategic location in the heart of Southern Africa, coupled with its diverse economy, makes it an attractive trading partner for Mozambique.

Mozambique, on the other hand, boasts of a long coastline with several ports, providing Zimbabwe with access to the global market.

To tap into this potential, both countries can focus on enhancing their trade relations by reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers, streamlining customs procedures, and improving transportation infrastructure.

This will enable businesses in both countries to access each other’s markets more easily, thereby increasing trade volumes and economic growth.

Furthermore, the two countries can also explore opportunities for joint ventures and partnerships in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.

Another area where Zimbabwe and Mozambique can tap into their economic potential is through investment promotion.

Mozambique’s natural resources, including coal, gas, and minerals, present significant investment opportunities for Zimbabwean companies.

Similarly, Zimbabwe’s expertise in agriculture and manufacturing can be leveraged to support Mozambique’s economic development.

To facilitate investment, both countries can work together to create a conducive business environment, including providing incentives, streamlining regulatory processes, and promoting investor confidence.

Infrastructure development is also a critical area where Zimbabwe and Mozambique can tap into their economic potential.

The two countries can collaborate on infrastructure projects such as transportation networks, energy generation, and transmission.

For instance, Mozambique’s ports can be linked to Zimbabwe’s transportation network, enabling the efficient movement of goods and services between the two countries and beyond.

This will, not only enhance trade, but also promote economic integration and cooperation.

Tourism is another sector that presents significant opportunities for cooperation between Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Both countries are endowed with rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, attracting tourists from around the world.

By promoting joint tourism initiatives and developing cross-border tourism infrastructure, Zimbabwe and Mozambique can increase tourist arrivals and revenue, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

We want to applaud the country’s trade promotional board, ZimTrade for diligently pursuing their mandate of promoting trade and exports in the country.

Their Outward Trade Mission to Beira, Sofala Province presented local companies with the opportunity to showcase their products and expertise to the Mozambican market.

The high level engagement saw a number of companies from Zimbabwe clinching lucrative deals, thereby expanding their markets.

A number of Mozambican companies have since expressed their willingness to invest in Zimbabwe in various sectors of the economy.

With Mutare ready to host this year’s Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, players in the tourism sector in Mozambique, have already confirmed their participation, thereby further promoting and boosting tourism between the two sister countries.

Ultimately, the political goodwill between Zimbabwe and Mozambique is a valuable asset that must be leveraged to drive economic growth and development.

By prioritising economic diplomacy, trade facilitation, and investment promotion, both countries can unlock the full potential of their relationship and create a brighter economic future for their citizens as well as contributing to the broader regional economic integration and prosperity.
