EDITORIAL: Doek & Slay organisers setting the right example

WHEN the organisers of Doek & Slay came up with their concept — a Sunday party exclusively for women — many analysts and critics told them that it was never going to work out.

They were told that the best entertainment shows in this country are not held on Sundays but on Fridays and Saturdays.

They were told that on Sunday, the majority of Zimbabweans go to church in the morning and then stay at home to bond as families in the afternoon and evening.

They were told that a sizable number of women also go to stadiums across the country to watch and support their local football teams.

So, in a way, they were told having a Sunday outdoor party for women in this country was not going to work.

They were told their concept would die a premature death and, if they were looking for any investors, they were not going to get any because of the massive risks involved.

To say that it was a trying period for those budding businessmen will be an understatement.

Somehow, these budding businessmen were not the kind of people who easily give up and the more they heard all these pessimistic voices the more they were determined to make a difference.

So, they kept fighting and kept planning and, in the end, they held their first Doek & Slay show.

It was a success, from the word go, with thousands of women showing up to enjoy themselves on a Sunday afternoon.

The show, which many said would be a disaster, was a phenomenal success from the word go and these budding businessmen knew they had struck gold.

To their credit, they did not rest on their laurels but kept working even harder to improve their concept and add some things to excite their fans.

In April this year, everything came to a climax at Alex Sports Club when more than 10 000 women trooped to the Doek & Slay show in what was a bold display of the strength of their concept.

That was their crowning moment of glory.

Now, four months after it shattered records as the biggest outdoor women’s party held in Harare this year, Doek & Slay returns to Alex Sports Club on August 11.

On October 26, the show will move to Lusaka, Zambia.

There are plans to take the Doek & Slay show to Zimbabwean communities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States.

This is quite refreshing because it shows that we have some budding businessmen who have created something special and are now taking it to foreign countries.

This is the innovation that we want to see in our creative sector.

We need people who think outside the box, people who are prepared to go out there, in foreign countries, and use their concepts to make money for themselves and the companies they have built.

The Doek & Slay organisers are writing a beautiful story and setting some good standards.
