EDITORIAL : Lets brace for the examination season

THE 2025 end-of-year examinations, a defining moment in the academic journey of thousands of school children, are set to go full throttle next week.

A number have already started but for many, we are in the final week of preparations. It is a crucial week, not only for learners but for parents, teachers, school administrators, and the broader education system.

For those students in the final preparations, this week is not about cramming—it’s about consolidating as the temptation to dive into every textbook and past examination paper is strong.

One of the key strategies is that learners prioritise subjects they find challenging, revise key concepts, and practice under timed conditions.

Equally important is mental and physical well-being. Students must get adequate sleep, eat nutritious meals, and take short breaks to avoid burnout.

While anxiety is natural, both school authorities and parents or guardians should ensure that it is managed with teachers, in particular, expected to be attuned to the emotional state of their pupils.

Teachers play a pivotal role in this final stretch, and their task is not to introduce new content, but to reinforce what has already been taught.

As such, revision classes should be targeted, interactive, and responsive to learners’ group or individual needs while offering tips on answering different types of questions and also simulate exam conditions.

For parents and guardians, the home environment can make or break a learner’s final week of preparation whereby distractions—especially from television, mobile phones, and social media—should be minimised.

It is also vital to maintain a routine that balances study with rest and, as such, parents should avoid placing undue pressure on their children.

Behind the scenes, school heads and administrators are tasked with ensuring that the examination process runs smoothly. This includes preparing examination rooms, securing papers, and briefing invigilators. Security and integrity are paramount—any breach undermines the credibility of the entire system.

Administrators must also ensure that learners with special needs are accommodated appropriately. Whether it’s extra time, assistive devices, or a modified environment, inclusivity must be upheld.

At the national level, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) bear the responsibility of overseeing the entire examination process. This includes printing and distributing papers, training invigilators, and ensuring that all schools—urban and rural—are adequately prepared.

Transparency and accountability are essential. Any delays, leaks, or irregularities must be addressed swiftly and publicly. The credibility of the examination system is a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s education sector, and all efforts must be made to protect it.

Ultimately, the success of this examination season depends on collaboration. Learners must take ownership of their preparation. Teachers must guide and uplift. Parents must nurture and support. Administrators must organize and safeguard. And the Ministry must lead with integrity and foresight.

/As school children sharpen their pencils and minds for the exams ahead, let us remember that education is not just about passing tests—it’s about building character, unlocking potential, and shaping the future. This week is the final lap in a long race. Let us all help our learners cross the finish line with pride, confidence, and hope.
