EDITORIAL : Maruwa deserves support

DYNAMOS fans are a hard lot to please.

All they want from their team is victory because this is something which they used to take for granted.

Their Glamour Boys are the most successful football club in this country and have written a number of success stories on the continent.

They are the only Zimbabwean club to reach the final of the CAF Champions League and they also battled their way to the semi-finals of the same competition, in 2008.

The Harare giants have won the domestic Premiership four times on the bounce, not once, but twice.

They have also produced some of the finest players to grace our football fields with George Shaya and Moses Chunga top of the pile.

So, for the DeMbare fans, this should always be the case – winning, winning and winning.

No matter what their team is going through or what it’s lacking, winning games is all they want.

When Herbert Maruwa took over the reins from Tonderai Ndiraya, who finished third last season, it was clear more was expected from the man they call Jompano.

Maruwa knew the demands, which come with managing the most successful club in Zimbabwe.

He said he wanted time to rebuild Dynamos and introduce his preferred attacking style.

Given they brought in a number of new players, Maruwa argued that it was impossible for his team to start performing to expectations overnight.

He rightly said his young recruits needed to be given time to understand the demands of playing for DeMbare, which are different, when compared to other sides.

Last week, the Dynamos bosses gave him an ultimatum to win the next two matches or face the axe.

On Sunday, he passed part of the test after winning 3-0 against ZPC Kariba.

He is now shifting focus to Black Rhinos, a game he is also supposed to win or face the axe.

Heading into the ZPC Kariba encounter, Dynamos had last won in April, a 2-0 win over CAPS United, at the National Sports Stadium.

He went on to experience a five-match winless streak as he managed four draws and one defeat.

To some fans, this was a complete failure.

At least, some of the pressure has been relieved by the impressive win over the road-weary ZPC Kariba.

Maruwa’s DeMbare are within striking distance of the leaders and if they win their next two or three games, they could find themselves leading the pack.

His cause is being helped by the fact that there hasn’t been a stand-out team so far in this campaign.

Even champions FC Platinum have found the going tough and while they have rebounded, with three wins in their last three matches, they haven’t been vintage performers.

Highlanders are back on top of the table but they have not been convincing too and we haven’t seen any spark coming from Chicken Inn.

CAPS United have been blowing hot and cold.

Maruwa might not attract respect the way Sunday Chidzambwa does but he is learning and deserves his chance.
