Editors from the country’s major media houses will this week embark on a tour of major road development projects being undertaken by Government to get an appreciation of measures being taken to eliminate corruption at tollgates and the process of awarding road contracts, among other critical information.
The tour is being organised by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara).
Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (ZINEF) national coordinator Mr Njabulo Ncube said the media would help shine a light on ongoing developmental projects.
“Zinara, being a public entity, is bound by law to be accountable to the public, and the media, representing different audiences, have a duty to report on how their funds are being used,” he said.
“The ERRP (Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme) has been extensively talked about by both Government and politicians, hence the media has to report on progress of this national programme.”
In an invitation to editors, Zinara chief executive Mr Nkosinathi Ncube said the media must report factually about the road development programme.
“Given the important role that the Fourth Estate plays in the dissemination of such, we found it was imperative that we invite you to this engagement, which will, among other things, include a familiarisation tour of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway and other projects financed by Zinara and provide a platform to meet Zinara, ERRP2 team and Ministry of Transport (and Infrastructural Development) senior officials.”
