Death toll rises to 80 as eight more bodies have been discovered

At least eight more bodies have been recovered this morning, bringing the total deaths in the RIDA Kariba Ferry disaster to 80 as searches continue.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo confirmed the latest development at a briefing this afternoon.

“We have had a a devastating tragedy in Kariba where several people have lost their lives,” she said.

“We have just received information on the recovery of eight other bodies, meaning we now have 80 deaths in the disaster.”

Minister Chombo hailed Government departments, the Zimbabwe National Army Boat Squadron, the ZRP Subaqua Unit, freelance divers, business operators and the community of Kariba for their efforts and support in managing the tragedy.
