Egypt has joined a growing list of countries expressing sympathy and solidarity with Zimbabwe following the Lake Kariba ferry disaster, which claimed at least 84 lives, as rescue teams continue searching for missing passengers.
In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt said it stood in solidarity with Zimbabwe during this difficult period.
“The Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt extended its heartfelt sympathies to the Republic of Zimbabwe, its Government and people, over the victims of the Lake Kariba accident, which claimed the lives of dozens and left several others injured. It also conveyed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.”
Egyptian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Maha Serag Eldin, also conveyed her condolences.
“On behalf of the Government and people of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Harare extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to His Excellency President Mnangagwa, the Government, and the resilient people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and especially to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in the tragic accident on Lake Kariba. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time of national mourning. These expressions of sympathy and support reflect the distinguished historical relations and longstanding bonds of friendship between Egypt and Zimbabwe,” said the Ambassador.
The messages add to the growing number of condolences Zimbabwe has received from countries and international partners.
Palestine, China, and South Africa are among the countries that have also expressed their condolences.
Rescue and recovery efforts are continuing as authorities work to account for all passengers who were aboard the vessel when it capsized on Lake Kariba.
