After failing to get a place in its last five runs, South African jockey Thwsaro Appie guided the horse to a win by 1.25 lens over pre-race favourite Captain’s Tiger in the feature.
Eight Street burst on the home stretch to win the race with US$11 250 in stakes, stopping the clock in 1 min 35.00 seconds.
Captain’s Tiger (1) had been the favourite against the six other runners as the four-year-old by Swanson was in hot form, winning its last two races.
Quiton Riddle rode the Century Stand gelding which could have been worse off at weights as it finished 0.75 lens ahead of Got Personality (7).
The much-expected duel between Captain’s Tiger and Chill Out failed to materialise as Chill Out limped home a miserable sixth.
The Lisa Harris trained Chill Out led from the outset as expected, establishing a three-length lead early, from second placed Captain’s Tiger.
Noleen Peech’s Got Personality patiently stalked the leaders along the inside fence and the race was shaping up for an exciting finish as they swung around right handed for the home straight.
Got Personality had crept up to second from the now tiring Chill Out and the stage was set for the filly to mark her return from South Africa in style with Captain’s Tiger seemingly fading on her inside. Eight Street suddenly came into contention as they rattled past the 300M post as Appie switched to the outside for a run and with less than two furlongs remaining the gelding somehow overhauled Got Personality to gain second place.
Stable companion Captain’s Tiger was flailing under the pressure in front and with the finish looming metres away Appie picked up Eight Street in masterly fashion and the six- year old stormed to victory.
There were eight races at Borrowdale and the last race was the Lotto Agents Merit Handicap 1 200m won by Balance of Payments trained by Karen Tselentis. The horse won in 1 min 10.10 seconds while Harris’ Cad Alley was a quarter length behind. The next race at track is the Borrowdale Sprint on April 24 before the FBC Derby on May 8 which comes just before the Castle Tankard and then the OK Grand Challenge.
