EIGHT men have so far registered to take part in the fourth edition of the Mr Ugly 2013 “beauty” contest that is expected to take place in Beitbridge in the last week of August to select Zimbabwe’s ugliest man. The event is scheduled to take place at Pagomo Heights Leisure Centre courtesy of Aerowise Entertainment.
The show will be held for the fourth time running following the success of three previous shows that drew an average of 30 men who volunteered to outclass each other to clinch the crown for Zimbabwe’s ugliest man.
Show organiser Mr Lovemore Chonzi said they had registered two contestants from Harare another two from Bulawayo, one from Gwanda and three from Beitbridge.
He said they had suspended preliminary shows for Zvishavane, Gwanda and Masvingo during elections adding that they would resume soon after the 20th UNWTO General Assembly.
He said the road shows would be used to select contestants for the main event in Beitbridge later this month, that will run under the theme “A Watch Word for the Wise”.
Chonzi said they could not hold the show last year because they were a lot of people who wanted to hijack their idea by holding bogus pageants under the banner of Mr Ugly.
“Preparations for the show are on course and we have had an overwhelming response we are looking forward to holding more road shows after the UNTWO.
“On the eve of the pageant we will host a men’s bring a braai pack party at the same venue (Pagomo Heights and Leisure Centre),” he said.
Chonzi could not disclose the prize money said it would only be availed to the shortlisted contestants to prevent the show from being hijacked by some unruly elements.
He added that pageant was being held under the guidance of a new committee chaired by businessman Hudson Mhlanga which had availed a lot of resources for them to conduct road shows in other provinces across the county.
Previously the team was led by Dominic Gwatirisa.
The panel of judges, he said, was still being finalised. In the previous contests women dominated the judges’ panel.
