In a city brimming with untapped creative energy, a new cultural movement is emerging to harness it all – the Eita Skeem Festival. What began as a simple dream to grow Bulawayo’s creative economy has transformed into a full-blown celebration of artistry, collaboration, and innovation.

Founded by local hip-hop visionaries Brintz and Farai, the duo behind the Hip-Hop Power Sessions and the Kwela Initiative, the three-day festival will take place from October 31 to November 2, promising to be a transformative moment for the city’s creative community.
“Eita Skeem (which means hey friend) was born out of a desire to see the creative economy in Bulawayo flourish.

After attending the British Council Creative Economy Week, we began exploring ways to make our own contribution to developing the creative sector.
“That’s how Eita Skeem was born, a festival celebrating urban youth culture, fostering collaboration, and creating a space for peer learning and innovation,” Brintz said.

Brintz said the event will bring together musicians, fashion designers, visual artists, and creative entrepreneurs under one roof to exchange ideas, showcase talent, and forge sustainable networks within Zimbabwe’s creative economy.
“The festival will open with an interactive conference focused on building the foundation of the creative economy. Emerging talents will engage with seasoned industry leaders through workshops, panels, and facilitated sessions.
“It’s about putting budding creatives in the room with people currently moving the needle. It’s reciprocal, the next crop not only learns but also teaches,” Farai said.

Day two will be dedicated to Abo Skeem Konvergence, the main festival show.
“This is the festival’s heartbeat, a high-energy showcase of urban creativity. With the entry fee pegged at just one dollar, attendees can experience a vibrant mix of live music, fashion exhibitions, and live art performances. The day spotlights the diversity and accessibility of Bulawayo’s creative scene.”

Day three is dubbed Dlala Skeem, a community games day.
“Closing on a playful, human note, this day encourages connection through community games and social activities. Play is an essential ingredient for creative exploration. It allows us to connect beyond job titles and see each other as human beings who share love for community and creativity,” Farai said. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
