An elderly man collapsed and died at the corner of Herbert Chitepo Street and Fifth Avenue in a suspected case of sudden death on Thursday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said the elderly man was driving a white Nissan pick-up vehicle when it suddenly rammed into a street curb.

Vendors rushed to the scene to see what was happening, and the man reportedly signalled to them that he was in distress.

The vendors helped him out of his vehicle, which had come to a stop after hitting the street curb.

“We helped him out of the car, and he indicated that he was diabetic and was in distress. We laid him on the ground to help him rest, but he started convulsing,” said one of the vendors.

Police declared the man dead on arrival.

When Chronicle arrived at the scene, police were collecting the body to take it to a local mortuary.

The vehicle that the deceased was driving was still at the scene, as his next of kin had not yet been notified.
