In recent years, a noteworthy trend has emerged in the world of gospel music as artistes are not only captivating audiences with their powerful voices but are also sharing their life stories through memoirs and biographies.
From Hollywood stars like Justin Bieber, who opened up about his struggles in “Just Getting Started,” to African luminaries such as South African gospel singer Rebecca Malope, who chronicled her life in “The Way I See It,” gospel musicians are using the written word as a platform to inspire and connect with fans on a deeper level.
Joining this transformative movement is United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean gospel songstress, Eleana Makombe, who has just completed her debut book, “A Journey with God’s Imprint.”
Set to launch ahead of her highly anticipated concert, Grateful 3.0, in May, Eleana’s memoir is more than just a collection of stories; it is a testament to her unwavering faith and the profound impact of her journey.
“It took me about a year and a half to write the book, and I’m thrilled it was completed last year, and I then took it to editors who announced last week that the book is now ready for public consumption,” she shared during an interview with The Herald Arts.
“My management and I decided the best time to release it would be in May, coinciding with the concert.”
Eleana’s book offers readers an intimate glimpse into her life, chronicling her experiences as a musician, mother, and woman of faith.
Unlike many artistes who draw inspiration from societal challenges, Eleana’s narrative is rooted in her spiritual journey and the milestones that shaped her career, under the theme “grateful.”
“What I have been doing was writing notes in my diary about my life, family, music, and friends, among other things,” she explained.
“The book talks much about my career, family, friends, and business, and how I have been grateful for all that.”
What makes “A Journey with God’s Imprint” particularly special is the heartfelt contributions from her children, Jason and Alisha, who have left their imprint in one of the chapters.
“Through the help of my management and my husband, John, we managed to interview some of the people who matter in my life, from musicians to relatives, and everything is in the book,” she said, her eyes sparkling with pride.
The memoir has been meticulously crafted, refined by two experienced editors, including one from the United States, whose identity will be revealed during the book launch.
“I wanted to ensure that the book resonates with my readers, and working with powerful editors was essential to that process. The other editor has worked with some of the international artistes on their books,” Eleana said.
The anticipation surrounding the book is palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting its release.
“We shared the book cover on social media, and they can’t wait,” she added.
As the publication date approaches, Eleana is not only focusing on the book but also on her upcoming concert. The Grateful Experience 3.0 will showcase a stellar line-up, featuring renowned artistes such as Spirit of Praise, Lebo Sekgobela, Heavens Mutamba, Ellard and Sharon Cherayi, Takesure Zamar, Sipho’s Ncube, Yousef T Gurupira, and Minister Michael Mahendere.
“Preparations are at an advanced stage, with all performing artistes booked and rehearsals in full swing,” she revealed. This year, the concert will be held at a larger venue to accommodate the growing audience.
Eleana’s journey is not just about celebrating her accomplishments; it’s about using her experiences to inspire others. “I believe as a role model to young girls and even fans, the book will be used to measure not my success but also to highlight some of the possible solutions for society,” she said thoughtfully. By sharing her story, she aims to empower her readers and encourage them to reflect on their own life journeys.
With the book set to go to print and available on Amazon a week before the concert, Eleana’s vision extends beyond the pages of her memoir. She plans to collaborate with airlines to make the book available not only at airports but also on board flights. “I want my fans to chronicle my journey, interpret it, and use it as a tool for societal solutions,” she emphasised.
As Eleana prepares to unveil her memoir, she stands at the intersection of music and literature, ready to inspire a new generation of dreamers and believers. Her journey of faith, resilience, and creativity is a shining example of how gospel musicians are redefining their legacies in the modern world.
With ‘A Journey with God’s Imprint,’ she invites readers to walk alongside her, discovering the power of gratitude and the beauty of storytelling.
