Electioneering starts ahead of Zifa regional elections

PROMINENT Mutare lawyer Ashel Mtungura’s name is being thrown around as an appropriate replacement for the elevated former Eastern Region chairman Piraishe Mabhena.

Although dates have not yet been announced, a by election meant to find a replacement for former Zifa Eastern Region chairman, Piraishe Mabhena, will be held any time soon after the incumbent was recently elected into the national Zifa board.

In an election that ushered in businessman, Phillip Chiyangwa as the new Zifa president, Mabhena garnered the highest number of votes among the four Zifa board members that were eventually elected into office at Zifa Village in Mt Hampden in the capital recently.

Accordingly, Mabhena relinquishes his Zifa Eastern Region chairmanship post.

However, it is the debate of who can take over from Mabhena that has drawn so much interest in meeting places in Mutare.

CAPS United supporter resident in Mutare Kufakunesu Sithole said it is high time we have someone based in Mutare for the top regional post.

“We are aware that every other organisation normally needs someone capable of executing their duties of Zifa Eastern Region chairman diligently before we look at where that person is coming from.

“However, our situation is a bit different. Mutare is central. We have had leaders of the regional body in one far corner of the region and that made it more complicated for the individual to reach out all corners. Even when it comes to attending league matches, a chairman based in a place like Triangle will not interact effectively and attend matches of a team like Mutoko Traders.

“Attending matches and interacting with affiliates is crucial in creating a vibrant league. There is need for the leader of the league to understand the day to day issues and state of affairs of the affiliate clubs. We can only get that through a person based in Mutare,” he said.

John Musikavanhu said Mutare is endowed with professional administrators who can take over the Eastern Region chairmanship.

“If you look at it all the chairmen from the Zifa Eastern Region have come from one side and we all know that. It is high time we have someone from a different location, preferably from a central point in this case – Mutare.

“We have professional administrators who can take over the Eastern Region chairmanship. Ashel Mutungura is one of them who quickly comes to mind. He has been in the game for quite some time. He has been with Eastern Lions and latter with Buffaloes. I believe he got the necessary experience. With his legal background, the region cannot ask for more,” he said.
