Electricity theft lands tuckshop owner in jail

A 34-YEAR-OLD man from Nyanga appeared in court for unlawfully diverting electricity from a power grid to his tuckshop

Zesa employees apprehended Bright Maturura for electricity theft, which cost Zesa US$8 712.

In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said sometime in July 2020, at Matema Business Centre in Nyanga, Maturura directly connected a power cable from the grid to his tuckshop. On 14 December 2023, ZESA employees discovered the illegal connection and apprehended him.

The court sentenced Maturura to 12 months imprisonment, wholly suspended on the condition that he completes 420 hours of community service at Matema Primary School.
