Government has started the electrification of Mola and other communities in Nyaminyami rural which will see schools, clinics and other public institutions being connected to the national grid.
This ties in with Government’s thrust of inclusive development where no community is left behind and solves a longstanding qualm by villagers that power passes over them to light other parts of the country.
The concerned communities are close to Lake Kariba with some of them being pushed further inland to make way for the world’s biggest man-made lake by volume. A source from Rural Electrification Authority (REA) said the groundwork had been completed with work starting this week.
“Diagrams for the electrification of Mola have been completed and approved,” said the source.
Teams are already on the ground implementing the project starting at Mola Business Centre. The line will run from Mola towards Siakobvu. Plans are that the public institutions would be electrified from the mainline.
Another team will be working on the Magororo-Msampakaruma line whose poles fell nearly two years ago.
The development is set to be a game-changer for development in the area where efforts are also underway to improve the road network with the main project being the Karoi-Binga Road. One of the major challenges for the project is the rugged terrain which makes it difficult to put up poles in mountainous areas.
The line from Mola will also connect with Chalala fishing camp. Most of the electricity infrastructure at Siakobvu has been affected by regular fire outbreaks.
