Kariba Municipality which recently had water intake and pumping stations disconnected by ZETDC over a $39 million electricity bill has turned its guns on residents and other ratepayers in a bid to recover $99 million.
After reaching an agreement with ZPC which saw the local authority crediting the power utility’s account to clear the debt, power was restored.
Faced with an $11 million bill to be settled by end of September, Kariba has threatened residents with water disconnections to force them to clear their debt.
Residents have been given a two-day grace period to pay and negotiate a payment plan.
“The Municipality of Kariba would like to advise its stakeholders, residents and ratepayers that the local authority will be disconnecting water on all properties with accounts that are in arrears with effect from Thursday 2nd September 2021,” said the local authority in a notice.
Residents associations in the town urged residents to work towards clearing their debt but called on Kariba to ensure they also target corporates.
