has 50 non-functional elevators. Eleco Elevator one of the country’s biggest elevator companies said the average cost of replacing an elevator is about US$160 000.
“The cost of replacing an elevator depends on the requirements of the installation,” said Eleco Elevator company managing director Mr Allan Nyashanu.
“The approximate cost of a 13 passenger six-stop elevator is US$160 000.”
Mr Nyashanu said elevators in Zimbabwe were old and had outlived their lifespan.
“We have elevators installed in the 60’s which now need replacement. So we advise owners of properties with elevators that it is necessary to replace elevators as some of them have surpassed their serviceable lifespan.”
Mr Nyashanu said it was now impossible to secure spares for equipment manufactured decades ago.
“The rest of the world has moved on and our manufacturers cannot continue to manufacture the required parts for Zimbabwe alone. Even if they would, this would make those parts exceptionally expensive,” he said.
