ELIJAH Mabhunu of the Zimbabwe Republic Police is this year’s Gutu half-marathon champion. Mabhunu romped home in 1 hour 5 minutes to claim the title previously held by Kelvin Pangiso.

For his efforts, Mabhunu got US$1 000.

“It was difficult because we had all the top athletes competing. I have competed in this race in the past but this was my first time to win,” said Mabhunu.

“Since the beginning of the year I have told myself that this season I need to win all my races and so far it is only in the Westgate half-marathon that I came second.

“I have won most of the races and I think I am on the right track.

“I had a good start to the race, leading from the start, and the other guys could not catch up.”

In the women’s section, Rutendo Nyahora retained the title for the third consecutive year in 1hour 16minutes.

“I am happy with my time because the Gutu half-marathon is difficult because of the course and the weather conditions, it’s hot there,” said the 25-year-old Nyahora.

“But I am happy that this time the race started early.

“The competition was tough, there was an athlete from Uganda and other seasoned athletes, like Constance Nyasango and Sharon (Tavengwa), but I took the lead from the beginning.

“My focus was to defend my title and I am happy with my time and performance because winning such a title for three consecutive years is not easy.”

The race is held in commemoration of the late Vice President, Simon Muzenda, and attracts most of Zimbabwe’s high profile middle and long distance athletes.
