ZIMBABWE Rugby Union general manager Sifiso Made has hailed DHL International for supporting the sport. Made told The Herald yesterday that DHL’s support was a shot in the arm for the sport.

The company held a coaching clinic at St George’s College at the weekend.

DHL “Africa As One” campaign, which is part of the build up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup, passed through Zimbabwe over the weekend.

Rugby enthusiasts lined up to pass a rugby ball from one person to the next as the campaign passed through this country.

From here a team of seven people will travel to Malawi before journeying to 41 other African countries in Land Rover SUVs, as part of efforts to spread awareness for the game in the build-up to next year’s Rugby World Cup.

“This all shows we are united and we want to grow the game of rugby in Africa,” said Made.

“It’s a great initiative.

“And going forward we hope to form more synergies with DHL.”

DHL Southern Africa marketing and communications manager, Khanyi Mamba, was delighted with the response.

“We started off in September in Cape Town, we have gone to Lesotho, Swaziland so this is our third visit.

“We are really hoping that we teach the children about rugby as our focus is to build awareness of the Rugby World Cup,” said Mamba.

At least 120 young players, drawn from various high density areas of Harare, took part in tag rugby at the weekend. DHL country manager Jeff Phiri said they were hoping to strengthen their association with Zimbabwe Rugby.

“We have begun a very good partnership with Zimbabwe Rugby and we are hoping to build on it from this campaign.”

“There couldn’t have been a better venue to host this event,” said Phiri.
