Elikem, a finalist in Big Brother Africa: The Chase, surprised many of his Zimbabwean fans when he turned up clad in Hovhorosi Style, a designer overall last weekend. Elikem who wants to marry Harare’s top socialite and ex-BBA housemate Pokello was happy wearing the hovhorosi when he touched down at the Harare International Airport.
The 24-year-old tailor fitted perfectly in the green and black Hovhorosi Style also known as Hovhan’a, not forgetting his trademark the tape-measure and a beret.
“President Mugabe is a true icon, even in Ghana and I adore him so much,” he said.
The designers of the Hovhorosi Style, Herbert Huruba and James Pande, confirmed Elikem was a big fan of President Mugabe and he came to know ‘‘Hovhorosi Style’’ through Pokello.
“We met with Elikem a day after he was evicted from the Big Brother House. He requested his hovhorosi.
“We should be proud of our identity. Gone are the days when we used to adore international labels such as FUBU, Fila, Nike and Sean John among others. We have so many designer clothes in the country, why not promote them,” said Huruba.
The hovhorosi with the signature of President Mugabe comes in different shapes and colours including white, green, red, black and yellow.
The Hovhorosi Style is the brainchild of Zimbabwe Entrepreneurship Youth Action under a project called “Youth Building Zimbabwe Hovhorosi Style”.
Huruba said the designer label also serves to honour President Mugabe, as one of Africa’s icons in the fight against colonialism.
“We want to pay tribute to a living legend, President Mugabe, for his dedication towards empowering the Zimbabwean youths and generations to come.
“We want to show that we take pride in our national flag colours and this is why the overalls have been made in different colours of our flag,” he said.
Pande added that their Facebook page was inundated with orders from people from as far as Australia, South Africa and the United States.
Some of the celebrities who have strutted the Hovhorosi Style include television presenters Prominence Makaza, Thabani Gambiza, Elsie Mojapelo, Kanyemba Bonzo, Mercy “Catwalk” Mushaninga, Alick Macheso and Roki among others.
Meanwhile Pokello and Elikem will be leaving the country today for Ghana.
The pair affectionately known as Polikem by fans won an all expenses-paid for trip to Kenya after Elikem scooped US$10 000 for the “Most Romantic Gesture” during the show.
