EMA appeals to churches

THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has called on all churches to play a leading role in the national clean-up campaign tomorrow.

The Good Friday campaign will be held under the theme ‘Promoting A Clean Environment Through Green Gatherings, Travelling and Transportation’.

In a statement, EMA said the day coincides with Good Friday, which is a very important religious day on the Christian calendar.

It is usually celebrated through church gatherings during the entire Easter period.

“Gatherings are generally associated with high waste generation, which can be detrimental to public health and the environment, if not properly managed.

“The Environmental Management Agency is, therefore, calling upon all religious organisations to lead in this national clean-up day by organising and participating in clean-up activities in and around their areas of worship,” reads the statement.

EMA also urged the nation to uphold cleanliness throughout the Easter period by cleaning during and after any gatherings.

“Everyone should clean where they are, be it in the household, workplace, marketplace, bus termini and any other place.

“Let us maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment.

“Furthermore, the public is encouraged to share with the agency the clean-up venues, number of clean-up activities and the participants for information management purposes.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that our environment is clean,” EMA said.
