The Environmental Management Agency has raised concern over spillage after seven cattle died in Shamva, Bindura and Mazowe Districts after drinking contaminated water.
The incidents occurred in the Wiseacre and Simoona areas where four cattle died, and in Tafuna Hills, Shamva, where three cattle died after consuming polluted water believed to have been contaminated by environmental spillages.
Environmental educationist and publicity officer, Mr Maxwell Mupotsa, underscored the dangers of poor waste and effluent management during the rainy and festive season.
Speaking during a road awareness campaign in Mazowe, Mr Mupotsa warned miners and industrialists to strictly manage effluent and hazardous chemicals, particularly during the rainy season when the risk of environmental spillages is high.
“We have recorded several environmental spillages during this rainy season which coincides with the festive period. Miners must continuously monitor tailings dams, cyanidation tanks and chemical processes to prevent discharge into the environment,” he said.
He added that cut-off trenches, emergency ponds and constant monitoring are critical in reducing the magnitude of spillages, while designated and trained personnel should always be on duty to handle chemicals and ensure adherence to Environmental Management Plans.
Members of the public were encouraged to report all environmental spillages to EMA, ensuring that the Agency remains on high alert throughout the festive season.
“In Mashonaland Central, environmental accidents have reduced compared to last year. However, we have attended to spillages in Bindura, Shamva and Mazowe districts during this period,” said Mr Mupotsa.
EMA has appealed for collective responsibility to protect the environment, human life and livestock as communities travel and celebrate during the festive season.
Turning to the festive season, Mr Mupotsa highlighted the need for heightened environmental responsibility by both the public and industry players during the festive season.
“As we head into the festive season, our message is Travel Green, Celebrate Clean. Every citizen has a role to play in protecting the environment,” he said.
He urged motorists to keep litter in bins in their vehicles until they reach designated disposal points, stressing that a clean road is a safe road.
“Loose litter and unsecured cargo can fall onto the road, cause accidents and pollute the environment. Travellers must ensure all cargo is properly secured,” he said.
