The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched a joint operation to combat illegal sand poaching in Harare, Ruwa, Chitungwiza and Epworth.
The operation has resulted in the arrest of over 40 individuals engaged in these illicit activities.

In a statement issued by EMA Harare Provincial Manager, Mr Leon Mutungamiri, emphasised that the operation was targeting individuals selling sand by the roadside, illegal sand poachers, roadside sand vendors, those involved in illegal brick molding activities and illegal transportation of sand.

According to Statutory Instrument 7 of 2007, commercial sand excavation, removal, or possession requires a license from EMA.

Mr Mutungamiri warned that trucks transporting sand without permits will be impounded, and roadside vendors risk being fined.

EMA urged residents to purchase sand from registered companies that promote responsible construction practices and environmental stewardship.

“Make your environment your pride and responsibility,” he said.
