Last Friday, Mother Touch Group of Schools hosted a Wellness Day as part of October Cancer Month at their junior school campus in Tynwald, focusing specifically on childhood cancer awareness.
The event was aimed at educating the community about the importance of early detection, healthy diets, and lifestyle choices in combating cancer.

The event, which was held in collaboration with KidzCan Zimbabwe, sought to empower children and their families with knowledge about various types of cancer and the significance of regular health check-ups.

The day was filled with engaging activities, including a lively Zumba session that saw students, parents, and even grandparents join in the fun, promoting both fitness and community spirit.

The junior school’s headmistress Mrs Rita Hwata said that the wellness day was not only about educating the students but the whole community around the Mother Touch Tynwald area.

“As the school head mother at our junior school, we are so excited to have such a day we talk about wellness,” she said.

“This is a day when we are commemorating October as Cancer Month, and we have invited our community to come together and share knowledge.

“It was heartwarming to see our parents and grandparents enjoying the wellness activities. We believe that educating our children about cancer is vital, and this event was a perfect opportunity to spread that awareness.”

The event also featured partnerships with local health organisations, including GenFin Medical Aid and Capital Appliance, who provided valuable insights on wellness and healthy living.

The school’s sports administrator Ms Nyasha Kadenge highlighted the significance of the wellness day,

“Our wellness day was designed to spread awareness about the importance of keeping fit and regularly getting checked to understand one’s health status,” she said.

“With cancer rates on the rise, it is crucial for both parents and children to be proactive about their health decisions.”

The Wellness Day, which is now an annual event, where the community also benefits through free screening and health check-ups, was started by the school’s founder and CEO Mrs Salome Mutsinze.

This year the event not only provided an opportunity for education but also fostered a sense of unity among families.
