THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has deployed over 100 volunteers and anti-litter monitors in Harare’s CBD.
They are meant to assist Council with waste disposal.
The “Clean-up Harare” campaign intends to maintain the city’s cleanliness and EMA wants to work with a range of stakeholders to achieve this.
The new scheme follows the failure of the city council’s “Chenesa Harare” campaign.
It will last for over three weeks.
EMA plans to continue monitoring the city’s cleanliness, after the campaign has ended, in order to prevent further illegal waste dumps.
The agency has called on retailers and transport associations to keep their places of operation clean on a daily basis.
EMA Harare provincial environmental manager, Leon Mutungamiri, said over 100 volunteers and anti-litter monitors had been deployed.
“Once we move out, we will monitor if the council is monitoring what we would have done.
“We also want tight monitoring as people dump their litter during evenings in the CBD.
“So, we do not want a recurrence of illegal waste dumps in the city.
“Transporters associations should ensure that bus ranks are clean and these include Copacabana, Simon Muzenda, Rezende, Market Square and Charge Office bus terminus.”
