THE Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development has urged women entrepreneurs to embrace digital literacy, emphasising that it is no longer a luxury but an essential tool for success in today’s world.

Speaking at the Women in Business Digital Skills Training Graduation 2025 in Bulawayo on Friday, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Mavis Sibanda, commended the women entrepreneurs who have committed themselves to transforming their businesses through digital skills.

She urged more women to come on board saying in the current era, digital literacy is vital for professional achievement as it enables individuals to operate efficiently, establish an online presence, make data-driven decisions and remain secure within the modern economy.

“Through their dedication to mastering digital skills, they have reached this significant milestone. I am particularly proud to be associated with this inaugural programme in Bulawayo, a pioneering initiative that sets a powerful precedent,” she said.

“Today, we acknowledge that digital literacy is no longer a luxury but a necessity — a fundamental tool for thriving in our modern world. These graduates have advanced beyond basic computer use and internet navigation.”

She highlighted that the graduates can now build an online presence via social media, websites and e-commerce platforms to promote their products and services while sharing their experiences with a global audience.

Dr Sibanda noted that the skills acquired open endless opportunities in education, employment and civic engagement.

“The digital world offers extraordinary potential for education, economic empowerment, innovation and expression especially for women and girls. Globally, digital skills are a prerequisite for active economic participation and should be embraced as a new form of literacy. This goes beyond technical proficiency, it bridges skills gaps, fosters growth and lays the foundation for digital marketing and beyond,” she added.

The Permanent Secretary also referenced a recent national address by President Mnangagwa, in which he urged citizens to equip themselves with skills necessary to navigate the complex global landscape.

She explained that in the commercial sector, the President called on individuals and companies to innovate, deepen research into scientific and technological ecosystems and remain proactive.

“He emphasised the importance of registering patents to protect Zimbabwean brands, products and intellectual property. Today’s event aligns perfectly with this Presidential call,” she said.

“You have seized this opportunity with unwavering commitment, giving you every reason to celebrate. Stand tall with pride as part of Bulawayo’s first cohort of digital skills graduates.”

She further emphasised that this achievement counters the ongoing digital gender divide and stereotypes that have historically kept women out of technology.

“You are the change-makers, future innovators and role models for the next generation,” she said.
In a speech read on his behalf by Chief Accountant Mr Stephen Ndagurwa, Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Mr Paul Nyoni, described the graduation as the beginning of new opportunities and not an end.

“This is a first for Bulawayo. The graduates have demonstrated commitment, curiosity and resilience. In a rapidly digitising world, skills in coding, design, digital marketing and data management are more important than ever,” he said. “We are proud of your achievements and excited about your future. Whether you pursue employment, entrepreneurship, or further education, you now possess the tools to thrive in the digital age. Let us celebrate this milestone and look forward to the impact you will make.”

Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart, represented by Councillor Mellisa Mabeza, highlighted the importance of digital platforms in today’s business landscape.

“Most people spend significant time on online platforms. Businesses must adapt to changing consumer behaviours,” he said.

“As the City of Bulawayo, we have embraced digital communication to better connect with stakeholders. I also urge women entrepreneurs not to just keep their certificates on shelves but to actively utilise these skills. By leveraging digital platforms, you can reach your clients more effectively. In this era of the fourth industrial revolution, digital media is not just for communication but also for transforming your business landscape.”

Over 80 women entrepreneurs graduated after completing a six-week digital skills training programme, which covered coding, digital marketing, design, e-commerce and branding, delivered by SharonTech Solutions.

The training will significantly benefit the women by enhancing their visibility, increasing sales, reducing costs and strengthening their brands.
