EMBRACE TECH OR YOU’RE DOOMED, POLICE WARNED

HOME Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe says a police force which doesn’t embrace the changes being brought by technology is bound to fail in combating crime.

He was speaking at the 41st Police Staff College Graduation Ceremony in Harare yesterday.

About 553 officers graduated and among them were 20 members from the Zimbabwe National Army, the Airforce of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service.

“Any modern police organisation bereft of technological appreciation is bound to face serious challenges in taming modern day criminality since criminals are always on the lookout for opportunities to propagate their enterprise through the use of emerging technologies.

“This has made it more than necessary that our police officers be equipped with not only modern tools of the trade, but high level theoretical and practical appreciation of how these technologies can be used,” said Min Kazambe.

Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Fredrick Shava, said the high level of professionalism within the ZRP, especially in peace keeping, is a testament to the effectiveness of the organisation’s training and human resource development initiatives.

Some of these programmes are delivered by the Police Staff College.

“Allow me to begin by commending the Zimbabwe Republic Police for maintaining peace and security in our various communities, so that our people go about their activities without any fear of crime.

“In the recent past, we saw how the ZRP seamlessly maintained peace before, during and after the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government.

“Even so, we always observe with pride the exploits of our men and women in blue, as they render selfless services to war-torn and destabilised parts of the world.

“As Government, we need to see improved police services for our people as a direct result of enhanced skills and knowledge from training institutions.

“Arming police officers with higher education qualifications strengthens their ability to serve the community and uphold Law and Order through their enhanced knowledge, skills and expertise,” said Min Shava.

He commended University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Prof Mapfumo and Commissioner General Godwin Matanga, for their unwavering support and guidance which have been instrumental in the Police Staff College’s ambitious endeavour to continually enhance the skills and expertise of police officers.

“I have no doubt that graduates from this institution are fit for purpose and will add value in executing the police mandate as enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development is propagating the Heritage Based Education 5.0 Philosophy in all institutions of higher learning, as envisaged by the Second Republic.

“The philosophy which encompasses teaching, research, community engagement, innovation and industrialisation is a panacea to the achievement of our Vision 2030, which seeks to industrialise and modernise Zimbabwe,” said Min Shava.

The graduates received diplomas in Law, Business Enterprise Development in Policing and Community Education and Lifelong Learning.
