After successfully launching more than 60 football academies at the start of the year, Herentals Group of Colleges expanded its wings in sport development and has launched a cricket academy in Chitungwiza.
The launch of the academy coincided with the honouring of Zimbabwe Under-19 and senior women’s batter Beloved Biza.
Biza who has been in fine form for the U-19 women’s team scoring four half-centuries in five matches against Namibia recently. She was honoured with a scholarship by the college founder, Innocent Benza.
Benza described the launch of the cricket academy as a part of the college’s objective to play a part in the development of the sport in the country.
“It’s with great pleasure that we are extending our sporting presence in the country.
“After we successfully launched our football academy at the start of the year, we are happy to be spreading our wings to other sport codes and we are happy to have launched a cricket academy.”
A sport enthusiast, Benza who currently plies his trade in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and owns four professional football teams, believes that sport plays a key role in human development.
“It is our desire that as a college we cater for those who are both educationally and sport gifted, hence the reason we also prioritise sports,” he said.
The launch of the academy saw the college honouring Biza with a scholarship at the college. She is a Form Three learner at Herentals College.
“We are excited to be launching our cricket academy and honour one of learners, Beloved Biza who has managed to break into the Zimbabwe Women’s cricket under 19 team and Senior team at a tender age at 15.
Benza believes that sport plays a part in molding the youths into responsible citizens.
“Sport is a vehicle for molding responsible citizens. We are happy to be part of this initiative and also play a part in the fight against drug and substance abuse among the youths.”
