Emmanuel High School students continue success in golf

Emmanuel High School’s nine-member ladies’ golf team recently emerged victorious in the World Cup Qualifier tournament held in South Africa.

The team, comprising Krystie Sbuneti, Melisa Mugando, Kayla Bareki, Kaylee Mutambudzi, Khomotso Mlauzi, Mindale Munemo, Lystiah Bangura, Nicole Maumbe and Nicole Shambairerwa, brought home two trophies and eight gold medals to qualify for the World Cup. Emmanuel High School has been competing in golf since 2020 with the aim of developing an appreciation of the game among its students and providing them with a competitive match schedule. The school values sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication, hard work, and enjoyment, and believes that these traits are necessary for success in golf and in life.

Each player in the team learns to value the inherent lesson in adversity, seek solutions to problems, and display composure during challenging times.

The golf programme aims to provide each student-athlete with the value of competition, the importance of consistent effort, and the love of the game.

The success of the lady golfers is attributed to their dedication, hard work, and passion for the sport.

The school faced challenges initially, with parents not giving in to the sport, but they now seem to be understanding and supporting it, resulting in remarkable achievements within a period of one year. The golf programme has also helped the students in managing the pressures of school.

Charles Kamba, patron of the team, said the tournament was a remarkable event that showcased the incredible talent of their student golfers.

“The team’s success can be attributed to their dedication hard work and passion for the sport. They trained tirelessly in preparation for the qualifier honing their skills and perfecting their game. Their commitment to excellence was evident in every swing.

“Since we introduced the sport, we have seen quite a lot of good results, I’m inspired to do even more,” said Kamba.

“We have played in the schools’ tournament against elite schools like Peterhouse. St George’s, and St John’s.

One of the team members, Mutambudzi, said:

“I had a good time during my stay in South Africa and learnt a lot from other golfers that side. I am hoping to improve my game by applying what I learnt.”
