THE Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) says it has released on its websites names of engineers and technicians who have registered with the council. Under the Engineering Council Act Chapter 27:22 and Statutory Instrument 161 of 2010, any person practicing engineering work or wishing to do the same in Zimbabwe is required to register with the ECZ.
The registration is aimed at promoting ethical standards within the engineering profession. ECZ is a statutory body established to regulate members of the engineering profession in the country.
In an interview yesterday, ECZ chief executive officer Engineer Ben Rafemoyo said the list was available on their website, www.ecz.co.zw
He said they would soon publish a similar list in the print media.
“Names of registered engineers and technicians are already available on our website. You can check to find out who is who on the website. We will also publish the list in other media such as print soon,” he said.
ECZ intended to publish names of registered engineers by the end of March this year but that was delayed because of an overwhelming response from foreign engineers and technicians mainly from China who have shown keen interest to register with the council.
The engineering council will also before the end of the year publish names of unregistered engineers and professions to expose them so that the public becomes aware of their status before giving them contracts.
The Engineering Council Act empowers ECZ to institute disciplinary measures on members that operate outside the ethical standards of the engineering profession.
The disciplinary action ranges from fine, suspension and deregistration from ECZ. In the past due to lack of ethical standards by some engineers and technicians, structures in certain projects have collapsed before their life span because of failure to follow the works’ designs.
Before the economic slump, Zimbabwe had 3 000 registered engineers and technicians.
