IN a heart-warming moment, eight residents from the Entumbane suburb have come together to buy a brand new wheelchair for a teacher who suffered a stroke.
The teacher (23) was having lessons at a school in Plumtree when she suffered a stroke in August and was admitted to hospital.
When she was discharged, her family could not afford the wheelchair, after spending a lot on her hospitalisation, and requested the community to assist.
Mr Nkosikhona Mlilo who coordinated the fundraising for the wheelchair said they were touched by the family`s plight.
“We are a united community at Entumbane and anything that affects one family affects all of us. So the family of the teacher presented their case and we came together to help them. There are church organisations within the community that were willing to lend her a wheelchair. After engaging we thought it fit to buy one so that once she recovers we remain with it as a community asset. It will also be part of the community ambulance that we are raising funds to buy,” he said.
He said the community is still raising funds to buy the ambulance and appealed to well-wishers to assist us.
The father of the teacher Mr Lisbone Sibanda hailed the support from the family saying it has warmed their hearts.
She said this was a sign that the community is united which is good for development.
“My daughter suffered a stroke in August this year and was admitted to hospital. It became difficult when she was discharged to recover from home to move her around and take her to doctors for reviews. I made a request to one of the administrators for the WhatsApp group we are using to raise funds for the ambulance and they acted so quickly,” he said.
