ENTUMBANE High School were crowned champions of the schools Under-16 Old Mutual Community Rugby tournament at Hartsfield yesterday.
The team thrashed Sobukhazi High school team 8-0 in the final match, after beating every opponent that came in their path in the knock out stages.
Entumbane High School rugby coach Emmanuel Sibanda said that his team were well prepared and deserved to walk away as the champions of the event.
“We were prepared for the event and I feel the boys deserve to be the champions of the event,” said Sibanda.
The event was graced by Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, Supa Mandiwanzira and his Sport, Arts and Culture counterpart, Tabeth Kanengoni-Malinga.
Mandiwanzira said the Old Mutual High Density Schools Rugby Development Programme provided exciting content for the media.
“I commend Old Mutual for creating a platform that will provide exciting content for media organisations in Zimbabwe. I encourage local media players to play their part by showcasing the talent through coverage,” he said.
Kanengoni said she was delighted to note that Old Mutual saw it fit to plough back into the community by partnering Zimbabwe Rugby Union to provide a platform for boys and girls to develop and showcase their rugby skills. She commended Old Mutual for complementing government’s efforts in promoting sports in the country.
The rugby fiesta marked the end of an eight-month programme by Old Mutual designed to promote rugby in schools from economically disadvantaged communities. Eight schools took part in the tournament with the initiative set to ultimately result in a bigger pool of players who will feed into the senior national select sides.
