SUNDAY saw some epic kart racing at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare.
Racing in all four classes was tight and full of excitement, but none more so than in the “Battle of the Minirok Class.”This saw Cameron Revolta (11) and Zac Dufty (10), racing bumper-to-bumper in all four races of the class.
At times spectators could barely see the space between the front and rear bumpers of their karts but at other times the gap spread to maybe five or six metres — which is not a lot over the 770m long track.
At times, they each reached speeds of over 85km per hour.
Young Danica Hockey and Calvin Mukondiona were effectively racing their own race and vying for third and fourth positions.
Dufty posted the fastest qualifying time in this class, by just .014 of a second and this was to prove crucial later in the day.
Dufty took pole position for the first race and set a blistering pace which Revolta could match, but not find anything more to affect an overtaking move.
Dufty reached the checkered flag with just one metre to spare.
The second Minirok race of the day saw Dufty on pole once more.
Following closely, eventually Revolta forced Dufty to outbrake himself in the corner at the end of the main straight and Revolta took the flag ahead of Dufty.
The third race saw Revolta on pole.
This time it was Dufty who was able to match the straight line speed of Revolta, but could not find any extra to take the lead.
The final Minirok race of the day saw Dufty once again in pole position, which he fought hard to maintain, despite pressure from Revolta.
The two diced for the whole race.
Eventually, in the chicane just before the finish line, Revolta pushed just a little too hard and span out. He restarted his engine and got back into the race to take second place, but by then Dufty had already taken the checkered flag.
With two firsts and two seconds each, the final decision went down to qualifying times.
The podium saw Dufty in first position overall for the day, Revolta in second, Hockey third and Mukondiona came home fourth.
Dufty was also presented with the Driver of the Day award.
Other winners during the day were as follows Cadets (age 6 – 9) first: Luke Rousseau, second Michael Perkins, third Bradley Hockey. Juniors (12 – 15) first Keegan Davie, second Isabella Savo, third Rogan Hoffmans. Seniors/Masters, first Brett Olsen, second Brendon McConnell, third Maurizio Savo.
