EPL HONOURS ZIM TEENAGE FORWARD

ZIMBABWEAN starlet, Tawanda Chirewa (20), has been honoured by the English Premier League after making his top-flight debut in January.

Chirewa made his first appearance in the league after coming on as a second-half substitute for Wolves in the goalless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 20-year-old forward was introduced in the 88th minute and played the final two minutes of the game.

This came just two weeks after the Zimbabwean made his senior debut for Wolves in the FA Cup third round fixture against Brentford.

He has gone on to make another EPL appearance, against Newcastle United, while also making the match day squad in several more games.

As part of festivities to celebrate his league debut in January, the EPL has given Chirewa a special memento.

The honour is given to any home grown player in England who makes his first appearance in the Premier League.

Chirewa was born in England.

The memento is presented with a personalised, engraved case containing the season’s match ball.

The other Zimbabwean to receive such an honour was Warriors star, Jordan Zemura, during his time at Bournemouth.

Chirewa has been named in the Warriors squad for the Four-Nation tournament to be held in Malawi during this month’s international break.

HE was included in the squad along with Huddersfield Town’s Shane Maroodza and Sheffield Wednesday’s Joey Phuthi.

Before joining Wolves, at 16 years and 31 days, Chirewa became Ipswich Town’s second youngest first-team player.

He made his debut in the EFL Trophy tie at Colchester in November 2019.
