Epworth revives town status bid

EPWORTH councillors have once again raised the pressing issues of achieving town status and appointing a housing director.

The discussion was sparked by an advertisement that appeared in The Herald on June 5, announcing a housing director position in Chirundu.

Councillors expressed concern over Epworth’s current lack of a director, when compared to other local boards like Hwange.

One councillor voiced frustration, asking, “Why does Epworth not have a director when Hwange has one?”

In response to these concerns, Epworth Local Board town clerk, Mr Wilton Mhanda, clarified that the council had been in communication with the Government regarding the status of Epworth and the appointment of a housing director.

“It came from the desk of someone who deals with Epworth, advising that the issue of a director cannot be pursued until we achieve town status,” he explained.

This suggests that the Government has tied the appointment of a director to the successful attainment of town status, which remains a priority for the council.
