THE four-year old bare filly, Equina by trainer Amy Bronkhorst, could be the one to beat when eight equine athletes are saddled for the running of the Sables Flyers at Borrowdale tomorrow.Coming at number two on the card, the Silvano filly will get the services of Randall Simons as it goes to the starting stalls for the 1 450m feature event.
This is a merit rated handicap for fillies and mares, with weight being determined at the discretion of the handicapper. The end result will show whether the handicapper did a good job in allocating weights.
On its last sprint, the Equina lost against Sports Hero on September 8 but it was over a shorter distance of 1000m and the horse could use the little extra distance to power to glory.
Equina will be embarking on her 10th career run and has so far won three races and was placed twice. Her last victory came in the penultimate race which was the Oaks Sprints 2000m where she finished six lens ahead of Belo Horizonte.
The Sable Flayers feature event is open to mares and fillies and carries a stake of US$76 500 with Penthouse (1) also posing a real danger to the small but impressive field.
Penthouse will carry a top weigh of 61.5kgs but will get the services of the seasoned Lance Pagels. Bronkhorst also brings this runner with a big chance.
Mother’s Eye (4) terribly lost form in her last race but the six-year old Irish-bred mare is capable of getting a place after Kirk Swanson elected Kevin Derere to pilot the horse.
Young trainer, Gorkhan Terzi, should feel confident on Solar Impulse who beat King Kahal by a neck in the last race over 1600m and once again Juan Paul Van De Merwe will hold the straps.
While the Sable Flyers should be the main race tomorrow, the race card will open with the Betting World Maiden where Sol Invictus (3) and Mine That Eagle (2) will be fancied .
Mine That Eagle has been placed in all his four starts but will be running first time around the turn. Sol Invictus is more experienced in this regard although Grey Desire (4) could be the dark horse.
The second race will come as the Graduation Plate where Captain Grant gets his first run in Zimbabwe in the 1600m race. Killa Man and Tanus will have their supporters but lightweight, Lake Nakuru has been ultra consistent.
