HOCKEY: Eradicators hungry for more titles

HOCKEY powerhouses Eradicators are determined to add the Knockout Tournament Trophy to a silverware cabinet which already holds this season’s Harare Outdoor league title.

Eradicators are in the semi-finals of the eight-team tourney and will play Africa Stallions next month.

Skipper Mike Banda disclosed they would use a series of friendlies, including one against a Zambia select side, to fine-tune their act before battling an Africa Stallions side that always gives them a good run for their money.

“We are now looking to take the Knockout Trophy as we are in the semi-finals now. The team has a positive vibe, this coming week we have a number of games against local clubs and Zambia the following week.

“Such preparations will make us more than ready for the semi-final clash on September 6. They (Africa Stallions) are a competitive squad, but having beaten them 4-1 in the league we hope to replicate that result in the semi finals,” he said.

Eradicators built their 2015 outdoor campaign on a solid defence, while Tawedzengwa Chadenga powered his way to the top of the scoring charts with eight goals in as many matches.

“It was a good season. Our aim was to be strong defensively and concede fewer goals. We did that very well, conceding only four in the season and this contributed to our winning the league. The team grew in strength after starting slowly, with each passing game we gelled,” said Banda.

After bossing the local scene, Eradicators have the hunger for continental glory but lack of sponsorship is holding back one of the country’s oldest hockey clubs.

“Eradicators has achieved many great exploits since its establishment in 1984,” purred Banda. “We pioneered development in the Mashonaland Province and players groomed by our club can be found at almost every club around the country.

“But on a continental level exposure is key and this requires numerous tours and participation at international tournaments.

“Unfortunately limited financial resources within the club and lack of sponsorship are stopping us from competing continentally.”
