The late and erratic rainfall patterns being experienced across Masvingo Province have frustrated farmers’ efforts to engage in serious agricultural activities this season.
Addressing farmers at Jerera Growth Point recently, Zaka District Agritex officer Mr Esau Mutuzungari said the erratic rains were only suitable for small grain production that could withstand low rainfall and high temperatures.
He also urged farmers to use early maturity maize seed varieties when the rains fall. “Because of the unreliable rains we are receiving, farmers are being encouraged to embark on small grains production,” said Mr Mutuzungari. “These small grains can withstand high temperatures and low rainfall.
“Most farmers have not planted their crops because of the episodic rains we are receiving. As such, we are urging farmers to practice dry planting so that when the rain falls the plants will be healthy.”
Mr Mutuzungari urged farmers to buy short season varieties that had a short maturity span. Zaka District is one of the driest regions of Masvingo province, and receives rainfall averaging 400mm per year.
