Escape bid proves costly

A 22-year-old Harare Central Prison inmate who was caught trying to escape at the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services stand at the Harare Exhibition Park has appeared in court.

William Goka of Masendu Village, Chikomba District in Chivhu appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

He pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody charges and was remanded in custody pending sentence. The complainant in the matter is Harare Central Prison represented by its prison officer Mr Joshua Sande.

Prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that on June 25 around 1pm Sande and his colleague Lordsoams Tomuchi escorted prisoners at ZPCS stand at the Exhibition Park, Showgrounds in Harare. While the prisoners were working Goka sneaked from the group and started running away.
