The husband, Blessing Mangunda (40), believed to be a councillor under Umguza Rural District Council, on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to physical abuse as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) of the Domestic Violence Act.
Bulawayo magistrate Mr Tawanda Muchemwa remanded him in custody to 25 May.
The State case as presented by the prosecutor, Mr Robin Mukura, is that on 4 May this year, at about 8.32pm, Ms Sibongile Mthize called Mangunda on his cellphone asking him to come to where she was staying since they were on separation.
She wanted them to discuss certain unspecified issues with him.
He went to her place of residence at around 2.39am the following day and she talked to Ms Betty Sibanda who stays with Ms Mthize.
Ms Sibanda told him that it was too early and asked him to come back during daylight but he insisted on seeing his wife, the court heard.
He went to where she was sleeping and before he could get into the house, the wife pushed him outside since the children were still asleep.
The State alleges that Mangunda assaulted her with fists and kicked her with booted feet all over the body.
She sustained a black eye on the left eye and according to a medical report in the docket two of her teeth will have to be extracted because they are already loose.
